Solstice Drift is our love letter to the longest day of the year — seven downtempo pieces for hot afternoons, slow evenings, and the warm haze in between. And because we make music in the open, the full multitrack MIDI that built every track is available for you to take apart, remix, and finish in your own voice.
The idea: one summer day, start to finish
We wanted a record that felt like a single June day unfolding. The tracklist follows the light: First Light opens soft and unhurried; Lemon Haze and Pool of Shade sit in the bright, blurred middle of the afternoon; Golden Hour is the warm peak; then Tideline, Cicada Dusk and Long Way Home walk it down into a warm night. Tempos stay in the slow 78–92 BPM pocket so nothing ever rushes, and the keys lean bright and major — with one dusky minor at dusk for contrast.
How we got the sound
Every part was performed through a Roland SH-4d, so what you hear is real analog- modeling voices moving in real time, not a frozen plugin preset. A few choices did most of the work, and they translate to any summer-leaning downtempo track you make:
- Pads carry the warmth. A wide, lush "sunset" pad sits under everything with generous reverb and a touch of chorus. In a hazy record the pad is the weather — get it right and the rest falls into place.
- Keep the low end smooth, not punchy. A rounded, fat bass with a long-ish gate glues the chords without fighting the kick. Downtempo lives or dies on a relaxed low end.
- Let one bright voice sing. A single analog lead and a soft bell patch trade simple melodic phrases — sparse, with space around every note. Restraint is the genre.
- Drums stay back. The kit is mixed under the music, not over it, so the groove suggests motion rather than driving it.
